RWAMREC during the 16 days of activism








From 25 November to 10 December 2010, RWAMREC participated in the 16 Days activities organized by the Rwanda Ministry of Gender and Family Promotion and the National Women’s Council. The following activities were carried out:
1. Public events: The national commemoration took place in Mukamira, Nyabihu District in the Western province on 25 November 2010. It started with public talks, discussions, followed by an official launch by the Minister of Gender and Family Promotion Dr Jeanne Mujawamariya. A large number of Gender stakeholders attended the official launching and this provided an opportunity to raise awareness on the benefits of non-violence.

2. Community dialogue: During the 16 days of activism, RWAMREC organized community dialogues on healthy families in Gakenke district where 200 women and men in coffee cooperatives were reached. In 2 coffee cooperatives, couples that were violence free were identified as role models and they were used to support other families experiencing violence in coffee cooperatives.

3. Training workshops: From 25 to 10 December 2010, RWAMREC organized capacity training workshops for Gender Clubs from Higher Learning institutions including, KIST, KHI, UNATEK, AUCEA. These training focused on promoting positive masculinity in schools.

4. Youth mobilization: During the 16 days of activism, RWAMREC mobilized 200 young adolescents from Nyamata District in Musenyi Sector. Youth from HIV clubs, Gender clubs, Karate clubs were trained, mobilized on non violence and how to prevent violence against women and children in their communities.


5. Closing ceremony: on 10 December, RWAMREC joined the Ministry of Gender and other stakeholders in the closing ceremony of the 16 days of activism which took place in Gakenke District where Gender stakeholders planted trees in Gakenke district
